How to succeed in business?
How to succeed in business?
For those more ambitious, young business people, who are only at the start of their career, or those a bit older who want to start again, here are a few pieces of advice on the right behavior which will lead them to the top.
1. Wear a blue or a grey suit and with it a nice red or yellow silk tie with blue spots or stripes. This is exactly the way people expect you to dress on work, no matter if most of your faculty colleagues wears such suits or not. If you are a woman, wear a grey or a blue costume and a nice red or yellow silk neckerchief with the appropriate pattern. No matter the sex, always have a briefcase that draws little attention, big bags are not welcome, and wear glasses whenever it is possible. Avoid a goatee, except when you are carrying out concise strategy which enables you to attack those in power.
2. Never say what you really think. Say what people like to hear, but throw your opinion into it, as well. This is harder than it seems. To achieve that, you have to listen to the other speaker to find out what he expects you to say. Listening is a good practice for later, when you are a part of middle management and you have to find out secret thoughts of people around you before they kill you. Later, you can stop listening, but that day is far away.

3. Be kind to almost anyone. If you have to be rough towards someone, do not hesitate. And if you have a choice between getting rid of someone or helping him, finish him later. People will look at you as someone who deserves victory and will be happy because of it.
4. Never sacrifice your friends and those you love because of money. It is only business, you know. People you love will be here long after you decide you are through with your career. That means you have to remove from you the people who have no life and who are trying to suck the life out of you. Meetings starting at 6 pm should be avoided, except if they are of momentary and crucial importance. Stick to the schedule of holidays. The office in which the privacy of employees is not respected is not something that you need, so create your own space starting with free weekends out of town.
5. Be patient with your superiors. They have an incredibly difficult job, at least most of them, and have to try hard to do it right. Do not be too disappointed if they fail to do something fast enough, according to your own standards and ambitions. In any case, do not let them see you praying for their death. You will insult them.
6. Be aware of what you can and what you can not do. That will prevent others from pointing to it.
7. Whatever you can do for yourself, do it. Do not transfer unimportant and hateful jobs to others. There will be time for it later, when you come to a point when other people will be tools in your hands.
8. Do not be jealous on the success of others. Their status has nothing to do with you, even though you might feel that way. There will always be people who are more successful than you, even though they are less valuable and talented. That is the natural order of things. Why worry about it? You will eat yourself with jealousy, and nothing will be changed. Instead of that, be happy. I know it seems stupid and impossible, but try it.
9. Never arrange a meeting if you can hold it over the phone. Never use the phone, if you have the e-mail. Never send an e-mail, if 17 words in an elevator can replace it. Do not travel only to show you are an important person who needs to be there. Do not ruin business activities with unnecessary chit-chat. Do the things as soon as possible and move on. If you really need to meet, take a pencil.
10. Be loyal, even if it harms you. Such behavior will be noticed and respected among your target audience, as would be the lack of it.
11. Do not blame others for your mistakes. In fact, do not even blame them for their own mistakes, even when you think that by doing it you would avoid trouble. Swallow it and never say sorry, even when you have an excellent excuse. ''Macho'' men, who transport furniture, absolutely hate excuses, especially good ones. Everyone makes mistakes. But only loosers apologize.
12. Be calm until the moment you can not longer be. Dig in. Be firm. Negotiating requires time. People are everywhere the same. Careers can also develop in a certain rhytm only if we give it a chance. Remember, people who jump from one job to the next every 2-3 years and during their career work on the surface of organizations which use their services, but do not love them. In best case, they can become consultants.
13. Do not become an consultant.
14. Do not be greedy. You are too young to make real fortune. If you needed to be a millionaire, if it was your destiny, you would have already known that. There is a greater possibility that your destiny is working hard, getting nothing for free and earn every penny you will need in your life, ok?
15. Have fun. If you can't have fun, don't. Who says it should be fun? It is business, not sailing.
If none of these rules work... do the opposite. That should work too.
